Sometime I come across posts on twitter that I feel the urge to say something about them but then I just calm down and keep scrolling. This is not one of those cases. This time, I decided to say something, or more like write about it. (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻
Is a Graphic Novel a Book?
Spoiler: Yes, it is.
Why would a graphic novel NOT be a book? Why would an adult not know this? Why would a parent use books as punishments? Why I keep asking questions? ┐(´•_•`)┌
I think most of comic readers would agree that indeed graphic novels are books. But if you disagree, I want you to consider the following picture.
A text(or “regular”) book convey its “message” using just words, a graphic novel does the same using art( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°). In essence both do the same, just in a different way. Why then, one would be a “real book” and the other wouldn’t as stated in the tweet post? The truth is, that’s a statement drawn from ignorance. Once you delve into Graphic Novels or Comic your perspective broadens and understand that they are books too. I know this because it happened to me.
WAIT, don’t go yet! Let me bore… I mean, expand on the topic a bit more.
We need definitions… from Wordreference.com:
2. a number of sheets of paper bound together, for writing, etc.:
Yeah, I know, I’m being picky, but in all honesty that’s the best definition of what a books is. Even if it has nothing written in it, it can still holds the tittle. Take for example the book Reasons to Vote Democrat: A Comprehensive Guide by Michael J. Knowles (please don’t go ╥﹏╥). This book, spoilers, has nothing written inside, it’s blank, yet the author managed to convey the message he wanted.
I’m sure of one thing, though, I’m not spending money on a blank book. (-_-) Unless it’s for me to draw in it. \ (◉∇◉) /
MAGAZINES… Oh yes, magazines. We love to collect them, stack them, and cut them to make beautiful scrapbooks. Not me, I don’t do any of those things. -_-* But, guess what, they are also books. After all, they have sheets that are bound together, and they convey a message. We just use the word “magazine” to identify the type of book it is. And that’s where the problem lies.
We use different words to identify the different type of books we read. Pamphlets, newspapers, journals, scrapbooks, comic, etc. And it’s all these terms what makes us forget that they are all books.
“But Solid, what about digit…”
Well, gotta go folks. See ya later.
Oh! If you have something to say leave a comment. ʕ⁀ᴥ⁀ʔ
